Twilight Inspired Crafts

This weekend we went to see the latest Twilight Saga installment, New Moon. I enjoyed it and you'll find no complaints here, however, I am not a Twilight aficionado, like my step daughter, Michelle.
I found some fun sites filled with Twilight inspired crafts and I thought you might like to visit them too.

Craft Contest
Twilight Amigurumi by April Draven
Twilight Crochet Dolls from DeadCraft

Craftzine Alice Wrist Warmers

You can also do a search on
Ravelry.com, Etsy and other crafts sites like CraftStylish for more patterns, ideas and crafts.

Happy crafting to the young and the young at heart!

Twilight Quote (2008)
Isabella Swan: "About three things I was absolutely positive: First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn't know how dominant that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."

Although, not Twilight inspired, this wonderfully handcrafted journal arrived today which will become a family heirloom for us. I urge you to support the handmade artists in your town and online at Etsy this holiday season.

Knit, Prance and Enjoy Your Free Pattern

Discovering joy in your life can be extremely difficult with all the stress we have in our daily lives. Today, for me, however, was not one of those days. After work, I decided to take the dogs out for a walk in the brisk air. They tromped through large dry leaves on the ground, rubbed their noses in who knows what, and basically had the time of their lives. I was laughing and feeling the joy they were emitting from their little bodies. They reminded me of the powerful lesson to find joy in life. You may have to look around, but it's there for you. Take just one minute to "prance like a yorkie" and I guarantee you'll giggle from this dog eyed perspective of the world.

To celebrate autumn, I have a special free pattern for you to celebrate this season of gratitude. Many of you have emailed asking for a scarf pattern to go along with the WowzaWristWarmers from Knit 1 for the Road pattern book. Here it is...my autumn gift to you, the Autumn Wowza Scarf. It's warm, soft and perfect for chilly weather.

Autumn Wowza Scarf

This is a companion piece for the Wowza Wrist Warmers from Knit 1 for the Road pattern book.

Materials:

1 ball Lion Brand Yarn, Wool Ease, worsted weight, 123 Seaspray, 80% acrylic, 20% wool, 3 ozs, 85 gms, 197 yrds, 180 meters

Size 8.0 (5.0mm) US Needles

Stitch Markers, Measuring Tape, Tapestry Needle, Scissors

Suggested Manufacturer’s Gauge is 4” x 4”, 18 sts and 24 rows

Note: The original wrist warmer pattern was made with Filatura Di Crosa, 127 print 43, 50 gms, 92 yds, 100% wool on the same size needle. If you’re using this yarn you will need 2 balls.

Cast on 33 stitches

Ribbing

Row 1 K2, P2 across row and knit the last stitch
Row 2 Same as row 1.

Continue these 2 rows for 2”

Next

Row 3 K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.
Row 4 K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Next Row starts the four rows of your pattern

Pattern Rows

Row 1 K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Row 2 K1,P 1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Row 3 K1, P1, K5, P3, K5, last two stitches K1, P1.

Row 4 K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Repeat these 4 pattern rows for 34” or desired length.

Next,

K1, P1, Knit across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Next Row

K1, P1, Purl across row to last 2 sts, K1, P1.

Repeat Ribbing for 2”

Bind off in pattern. Weave in all ends.Total length was 38”.

Block if necessary.

Blocking method that I used:

I sprayed the scarf with tepid water, placed on the ironing board and used an ironing cloth or a cloth you have on hand (very important) over the scarf and lightly ironed over the scarf with a low heat. After ironing, I placed it flat on a towel to dry completely where it would be undisturbed.

You can also use a rust proof pin and lay flat on a blocking mat, board or towel and dry overnight if you don't feel comfortable using and iron.

Lay flat when ironing or blocking

Here's an excerpt from one of my patterns, Travelin'LiteMini Clutch that I thought you might enjoy if you are new to intarsia, and want to alternate color. Need additional help? Visit knit1fortheroad.com and click on Intarsia Anyone? and YOUR GALLERY for additional inspiration, where Debra was kind enough to send in pictures of her first projects like this. You can also visit margknittinaround on Etsy for the pattern.

KNIT - cross yarn behind needle

PURL - cross in front of needle

Cross yarn over avoids a hole in your knitting where you join two sections of color or add a new strand of yarn.

Bookmark and Share

Twist yarn under and around previous color when you knit so that there will not be a hole in your knitting…to purl you would cross over.

TIP: Take some yarn off of each ball so that you can tie on and make your color blocks more easily. You can do a butterfly wrap or wrap it around a yarn bobbin. You can find them in the sewing section or needlepoint section of your local yarn store. The flat plastic ones are the kind that I like best. Wrights Boye is found on

http://www.wrights.com/ or your local yarn store.

NO HOLES, NO WAY!

I know you can do it!

Here are a few suggestions for you to consider when thinking about your knitting or crochet future in 09. Think about where you may need more work or maybe more courage in regards to your knitting skills or projects. You may be surprised with what you come up with and the result of your efforts.

1. Always knit a gauge when required. (hard one, I know)

2. Find time to knit or crochet for charity. (difficult but extremely worthwhile to not only the one you help, but also your mind and spirit)
3. Take control of the stash! (this one stays on the list every year!)
4. Dedicate some time each week or month to share knitting projects, skills, or advice. (Easy and fun!)

5. Study new techniques and try to make at least one major knitting event each year and encourage other knitters you know to come along. (FUUUUN)
6. Check out your local yarn and craft stores for classes and free groups to join in the community. (inspiring)
7. DARE to knit in public! (adventurous and fun to document-pics or journal- for yourself or blog)
8. Listen to podcasts (relaxing and informative) Visit knit1fortheroad.com for suggestions.
9. Join an internet community for support. (like Ravelry.com
.)

10. Try to enjoy the process and any happy accidents that are included in that process.

11. Document your projects by keeping a knitting journal online or on paper and include digital photos, pattern and gauge swatch.

12. Look for inspiration around you for colors, textures, or patterns that you might want to incorporate into your knitting. These ideas can also be documented for future use.

Some new things for this blog in 09 will be more interviews with knitters, business people involved in the knitting/crochet world, Etsy artists, and people who will inspire you to make a difference with your knitting.

More knitting lessons, tips, and info being added to the blog and also to
www.knit1fortheroad.com. Another book is in the works and there will be a giveaway or two. You are also encouraged to send in your finished Knit 1 for the Road patterns (in the book and from my Etsy shop, margknittinaround) and any of the Knit/Crochet Along projects for charity. You may send them to knit1fortheroad@gmail.com and I will post them on the Knit 1 for the Road gallery. This is a great way to share your creativity with others. The next knit/crochet along will be announed Janurary 09 - stay tuned!

Thanks to all of you for your emails and suggestions, reading this blog, as well as visiting my Etsy shop, and purchasing any of my patterns and of course, the book.

Have a happy and safe new year's celebration and enjoy your knitting.

The last of the knitted presents is finished - Hooray!
This fabulous throw is one of LionBrand's handy free patterns and knits up quickly which we like, right? (4 strands of Jiffy yarn and Size 50 BigStix) It's called Fast Finish Throw Pattern #: 60681A and is rated Beginner. Once finished, you will have a nice warm and colorful addition to your home, office, or car.

The pattern grabbed my attention so I made it for my husband, Dave who is always trying to take my throw - yes, Virginia, men get cold too! Now he will have his own and no girls allowed. One has to wonder - Do we ever really evolve past grade school?

Thanks for all the holiday cards, emails and coming by my Etsy shop. You are awesome!

New book, new patterns, more interviews with fellow knitters/crocheters, Knit/Crochet charities, Indie artists and more are in store for you in the coming year. That's my present for you.

Every time I go to an event, I pick up a pair of Serendipity knitting needles which are smooth wooden needles with decorative polymer clay finials. They're fun, sturdy and make a great conversation piece. Don't be surprised if people - especially kids, are drawn to you when you're knitting with these decorative knitting needles. You can find them online at FlyingFingers, one of my favorite online shops. Each pair is unique. Do visit the websites for pictures of these amazing needles.

The Ravenna Satchel from Marta McCall at Tinkknit.com

Over the weekend, I was looking over my info from the StitchesEast event and I came across a info on patterns from Marta McCall and found a site to get your creative juices going on a Monday called Tink knit.com. I especially love the bag patterns (of course - you know this by now if you've ever checked out my blog) but there are plenty of really wonderful patterns and accessories for you to drool over - no worries. This site will definitely inspire you. More later on Stitches as I plow through my material...you're getting it as my brain processes it.

Stay tuned for more events coming this winter, more Stitches stuff, and a whole lot more!

The new Anthropologie catalog is out and I found a goodie called Pickstitched change purses. These are nice not only for carrying around change, but a small ipod, knitting goodies and their stylish at the same time. There are also lots of other great choices for you.

You can also visit Etsy for more choices of handmade change purses and goodies. Type in change purse or clutch and check out the different shops. Easy or what? and you're supporting the small handmade folks like me! There are also patterns if you're crafty so that you can create your own. Marg sporting a modified scarf I just finished with Vegas from SWTC. Visit my Flckr account or Ravelry project page if you are on Ravelry (margknittinaround) for closeup pics that show the fringe and more info about the pattern from VickieHowell Collection.

Next time, I am going to share the info and goodies from StitchesEast. I know, I promised to do so earlier in the week but life got in the way a little and I want to do the event justice so I'm working on it over the weekend so you get full effect!

Update on Max, my yorkie - he encountered the neighbors' puppy, now almost full grown and a pitbull dog, yesterday. Bella, the pit bull, always playful before, but leashed, came flying out of her yard, across the street and on our heels in about two secs. I'm sure my dogs probably look like rabbits to her. All I heard was the neighbor yelling her name and a growl behind us. Thankfully I had the sense to use halters for the yorkies, and I snatched them up pretty darn quick just in case and kept movin', before Max started his alpha dog BACK AT A YA bs. The neighbor caught up with his dog pdq and had to carry her away. Now - this could have ended badly for Max since he's only 5 lbs. Please remember to keep your dog on a leash or harnessed (if small guys) and be mindful of dogs coming up from behind...Molly was once grabbed by a hunting dog from behind while we were walking and got picked up and shaken. You can't really fault the dogs for doing what comes naturally, but as the dog owner, you need to be aware of the risks of incompatability amoung dogs. Embrace nature, nurture, and never take chances with babies, pets, and remember in life - and the dog park, not everyone wants to be your new bff.

Put your stix together or grab a hook for a little knitting or crochet this weekend to soothe your nerves and thanks for coming by :)

You know by now, I like to give you options and I'm really stuck on doing things in 3's so here we go...Today I found three different types of bangles for your wrist to make for yourself or for gifting! (yes, that's a little word I picked up from HSN-heehee)Another weird word I luv is when the steward/ess announces to get ready for deplaning - WHAAT? or maybe deboarding? but that's another blog.

Check out this affordable felted bracelet kit from PickupSticks I found on

SuperCrafty.com. This is really a nice project that can be worn throughout the holiday season and on into the new year. I especially like to wear and use other colors besides Christmas red and green, gold and silver during the holidays.

Another goodie comes from

EarthFaire called appropriately, Leaf Bracelet. This bracelet is knitted - I know - amazing- and beading is included. A great project for you crafties out there who like to incorporate your knitting skills into other areas of crafting. The kit includes everything you need to make this beauty...also affordable.

One more option is embellishing a bracelet with ribbon as seen here in the Judi & Co. bracelet kit from DreamWeaver (on sale now) which includes two bracelet forms, ribbon and pattern.

Keep those creative thoughts coming!

MAX'S PET PEEVE DEPT - NO TREATS FOR HALLOWEEN

This is Max and he has just lost 5 lbs since his last vet visit and is now the perfect healthy Yorkie weight. Many have asked him how he did it...Max says his mummy switched to Beneful (weight management), more excercise and no treats. He is still a little devil though, as you can see in his Halloween pic and he finds that being lighter makes for a really quick getaway.

Come by tomorrow for knitting and crochet projects for the holidays.

Her past guests have included Carol Ventura, Doris Chan, and Julie Armstrong Holetz. I hope you'll stop by to listen and learn. These shows are also great for knitters who are already crocheting or hope to add it to their skills.

Need a little crochet mystery? Check out Hooked on Murder: A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hecktman. Each book in the six-book series also includes patterns and yummy recipes.

And because I seem to always have to do things in three's - here's the third crochet item for you...the Boomerang Crochet Hook- tada! These hooks are made with cherry-wood handles that are not only beautiful, but functional too. The handles' ergonomic shape really helps you grip and ease any pain or cramping...and we all know we tend to overdue during the handmade gift giving season. I know I'm guilty of the "just one more row/round" syndrome.

Finally, thanks to all of you who have emailed, visited and bought items on my Etsy shop, margknittinaround, voted for the book at TheAuthor's Lounge and checked out the recent interviews...thank you, thank you and big hugs to you all!
